Wednesday court round-up — Surgery abuse and 'boy racer'

A “boy racer” who led police on a high speed chase through Perth after being disqualified from driving for a third time has banned from the road for nearly four years.

Dawid Koprowski accelerated away from police at “double the speed limit” when they spotted him parked outside a filling station on the edge of the city.

Perth Sheriff Court heard how officers were forced to call off the pursuit when it reached built-up residential areas.

Koprowski, 20, returned to the dock for sentencing having previously pled guilty to dangerously driving a black Audi S3 on November 10 last year by travelling at excessive speeds for road conditions, while repeatedly overtaking vehicles in a dangerous manner.

He led police on a chase along Edinburgh Road, Gleneagles Road and Glendevon Road. By the time his car reached Darnhall Drive, officers were forced to abandon the chase.

Koprowski, of Perth, also admitted driving while disqualified – his third such conviction.

Sheriff William Wood told him: “This was pretty appalling.

“You were being what used to be described in the press as a “boy racer. You endangered the lives of other road users. You endangered the lives of police officers who were trying to enforce the law.

“This won’t do.”

He said the custody threshold had been reached but was satisfied there was an alternative to prison.

Koprowski was ordered to carry out 272 hours of unpaid work and further banned from driving for 45 months.

“Do please wake up and smell the coffee or you’ll just end up back here,” the sheriff added.

Abused surgery receptionist

A Callander woman abused medical staff after running out of pain medication.

Kay Mason told the receptionist at the town’s health centre “I’ve been trying to get hold of you for four f***ing days”.

The 36-year-old had apparently failed to account for the centre being closed the previous day because of a public holiday.

Stirling Sheriff Court heard Mason abused the woman, telling her “If you don’t get it sorted I’m coming down there to drag you over the f***ing counter”.

Mason’s solicitor said she had been waiting four days for medication and was in “utter agony”.

Mason, of Keltie Bridge, admitted behaving in a threatening and abusive manner on June 3 last year.

Sheriff Neil Kinnear fined her £170.

City centre stamp

CCTV footage captured a sickening assault in Dundee city centre in which a man was repeatedly stamped on to the point he lost consciousness. Barry Hall has now been jailed after previously admitting carrying out the attack on an associate on Nethergate, close to the Overgate.

Knifeman

A seasoned offender pulled a knife on a man in Perth after being thrown out of a city flat.

Dylan Dobbie produced the blade after being told by a man he was no longer welcome at the property on Gilsay Place on May 24 this year.

Dundee Sheriff Court was told how police called to the scene later found a silver knife next to a tree.

The “hostile” man who was involved in the argument told officers he had tried to throw Dobbie out before he pulled out the knife.

Dobbie, remanded at HMP Perth, pled guilty to possessing a knife just weeks after he was released on licence from HMP Barlinnie.

His not guilty plea to assaulting the man with the knife was accepted by prosecutors.

The 29-year-old was sentenced to 10 months of his unexpired portion of sentence by Sheriff James Williamson.

He was then ordered to serve four months in custody thereafter.

Hotel attack

A rapist has been jailed for nine years for an attack on a teenager who died after being hounded online following the crime. Maneeb Javaid forced himself on the then-18 year-old at a Travelodge hotel in Glenrothes in July 2019.

Campaigns of abuse

A Buckhaven man who asked a young boy to urinate on him in a five-year campaign of sexual abuse has been jailed.

Johnathon Taylor abused two youngsters – a boy and a girl – at addresses in Fife as early as 2014.

The girl was targeted in a four-year period until 2018, while the boy fell victim between 2027 and 2022.

Following a trial at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, 38-year-old Taylor, of Wellesley Road, was convicted of three separate charges.

He observed the young girl, aged between seven and 10, in a state of undress between by entering a bathroom and bedroom uninvited and staring at her naked body. He also sat her on his lap while he was aroused and removed her bra.

He was further convicted of sexually assaulting the boy, aged between five and 10 by observing him in a state of undress, twisting and grabbing his nipples and asking him to urinate on him.

Taylor also behaved in a threatening and abusive manner towards the boy.

At a sentencing hearing solicitor David Cranston, defending, said his client was of “exemplary” character and had led a “pro social” lifestyle.

He said Taylor’s partner was standing by him and risked losing her home due to the loss of his income if he were to be imprisoned.

He said: “Mr Taylor has not enjoyed his time on remand – it’s been a shock to him given his lack of (prison) experience and he’s aware my lord could continue his incarceration today.”

However a social work report stated Taylor is “a high risk” of reoffending and this would “likely to be of a similar nature”.

Sheriff Steven Borthwick told him the offences against the boy had included violence, adding: “In evidence from the complainer he indicated this violence was particularly unpleasant and harmful.”

He also noted a victim impact statement from the girl indicated Taylor’s actions had left her with, “significant and long-lasting psychological harm. This harm has affected every aspect of her life and continues to affect her to this day.”

He jailed Taylor for three years and ordered that he remain on licence for two years after that. He also placed him on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

A five-year non-harassment order was imposed in relation to both complainers.
